Lakeshore Chinooks (4) at Madison Mallards (5)

The Chinooks found themselves swimming upstream Saturday night in a 5-4 10-inning loss to Madison in game one of their two game weekend series verses the Mallards on Saturday. Unfortunately the Chinooks fell victim to some hard luck plays that set an ominous tone early in the first inning. Forrest Chadwick (Southern Maine) lead off the game with a bullet single right back up the middle, and Ryan Ussery (Alabama-Birmingham) immediately followed with a walk. Eric Aguilera (Illinois State) then hit a line drive that would have plated the game’s first run but the ball hit Ussery on his way to second so he was ruled out. Connor Lynch (Georgia Tech) proceeded to fly out and end the treat. Lakeshore’s offense continued their struggles with runners in scoring position on this night, a pattern that dates back to their most recent home stand beginning Monday against Lacrosse. The Chinooks would put two more runners on in the second and fail to score. This sounds like a broken record but more bad luck fell upon the Chinooks in the third. Ty Young (Louisville) was hit with a pitch to reach first with one out. Eric Aguilera then hit yet another liner that appeared to be ticketed for the right field corner, but instead found the webbing of the first basemen’s glove. The Mallards where able to double up Young who found himself caught in no man’s land between first and second. After a sub-par performance by the Chinooks pitching staff at home Friday night, Tyler Thicke (Madison College) certainly did his part to change that on Saturday. Thicke held the Mallards off the scoreboard through the first four innings. Thanks in-part to an elevated pitch count and shaky defense, he ran into some trouble in fifth surrendering two runs before giving way to Josh Uhen (UWM) with one out in the sixth frame. The elusive clutch hit finally came for the Chinooks in the seventh. Ryan Krill (Michigan State) lead off with a three bagger and was brought home on Zack Granite’s (Seton Hall) RBI single. He then stole second and was plated by a Matt Morse (Alabama-Birmingham) sacrifice bunt all the way from second trimming the Mallard lead to one at 3-2. The eighth saw more action for the Chinooks. Ty Young lead off with a hit, stole second, and scored on another clutch extra base hit for Aguilera, tying the score at 3. Krill gave the Chinooks their first lead with an RBI single. Charlie Markson (Notre Dame) would come in to pinch run, stealing both second and third, putting an insurance run ninety feet away with only one out. The next two Chinooks hitters would proceed to strike out, but the Lakeshore still held a 4-3 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth. Josh Uhen would retire the first two Mallard hitters in the eighth before they would load the bases and score on a wild pitch that could not be handled by catcher Connor Lynch (Georgia Tech) tying the score at 4-4. Hard throwing lefthander John Hamilton (UNC-Charlotte) came on in the ninth for the Mallards and rendered Chinooks batters helpless, allowing just one base runner who would soon be erased on a failed steal attempt. The Mallards took advantage of an error by first basemen Bre Kimbell (Louisiana Tech) who threw the ball into short centerfield while trying to nab the lead runner heading down to second with one out. Eric King (UWM) was then brought on to get out of the jam. A walk loaded the bases and set up a potential double play that could get the Chinooks out of the inning. King got a ground ball to second but the return throw back to first base was ruled late on a bang bang play and the Mallards plated the winning run. The series continues Sunday as the Chinooks look to get back on track vs. Madison at 3:05p.m. |
